I was truly disappointed not to be there, the night of the reception... I had to be up at SFA for course work, and the Texas National Reception happened to be the same night. Nonetheless, everyone at BAL was warm and welcoming to my representatives: my wife, and my three younger children, who were thrilled to receive the ribbon for me.
This painting really meant a lot to me-- I had been planning it for some years, until I felt my notion of what I meant to portray was sufficiently developed. So many images of the Nativity have been attempted throughout the history of Western Art, that I didn't take it lightly. There was a specific story I wanted to tell; then, in the course of the execution of the painting, a few small surprises occurred. If you have any comments, or just want to discuss the theme (it's not been common in contemporary art), I'd love to hear from you.
