It is always a little disappointing not to carry the prize in the big shows, but sometimes not as bad as others. Waiting for the Morning, by Ananta Mandal of India, is really a beautiful painting. It employs very precise value judgment in the blends between light and dark, and positive and negative; while at the same time succeeding in depicting the subject matter. Those trains have mass, they tower over the platform and the people while still having an extraordinary visual charm. Can't you almost smell the smoke and grit? Don't you need to blink, from the dust and the whoosh and clang of the brakes? I can't help but feel juror Jan Wallake got it right on this one. Congratulations to Ananta Mandal, and all the other winners!
